Use grit 100 to file old product during filling and to shorten the extension. Grit 100 can be used on freshly applied gel to remove any excess product if necessary, but you should never file with grit 100 on newly applied acrylic, as the vibrations can destroy the not fully hardened molecular structure.
180 grit is best for fresh extensions where the shape needs to be filed.
A banana shape is ideal for use in the nail bed area, as the shape is rounded to avoid sharp edges and overexertion of the wrist.
